Using the Map
The map is the foundation of MariMap. It’s where you:
- Explore sites and boundaries
- Turn on layers and environmental indicators
- Validate geometry before surveys and reporting
- Open site details and monitoring workspaces
Map basics
- Pan/zoom like any web map.
- Use search (if available) to jump to a place or region.
- Click a site to open its details (site profile, monitoring workspace, analytics).
Site polygons and display modes
Sites typically have a polygon boundary. That boundary is used for:
- Sampling satellite indicators
- Clipping or intersecting GIS context
- Defining where repeat surveys are intended to happen
Some workspaces include a site display mode toggle (for example 2D/3D). Use:
- 2D for accurate boundary editing and QA.
- 3D for presentations and terrain context (when available).
Layers and overlays
MariMap can show multiple layer types:
- Basemaps (satellite vs vector styles)
- Habitat/ecosystem extents (reefs, mangroves, seagrass)
- Boundaries and protected areas
- Project/site context overlays
Good practice:
- Validate site boundaries against satellite imagery before creating plans.
- Use protected area overlays to confirm governance context.
Indicators (satellite and environmental context)
Indicators are time series or spatial layers sampled from authoritative providers (for example Copernicus/NOAA).
Key concepts:
- Indicators are context, not “verified outcomes”.
- Sampling is typically done at the site geometry (or a derived coastal band), so geometry quality matters.
Use these references when interpreting indicator values:
Troubleshooting
- No data appears: confirm you selected a site (and the correct project scope).
- Sparse time series: try a different date range or aggregation (daily/weekly/monthly).
- Layer attribution questions: use Data providers.
